Paver Guide
There are many types of pavers. Most come in a color blend, instead of just one solid color.
When looking in a catalog, typically there are two words describing the type (size), and blend (color) of pavers. In the examples below, the picture list the manufacturer, type, blend, and number of pieces
in each set.
The possibilities are endless. Many clients choose to compliment the main section of the area with a different color soldier course (border).
Tremron Mega Olde Town Sierra 3 Piece
Belgard Appian Ammaretto 2 piece
Tremron Roma Sand Dune 3 Piece
Installing Pavers
Excavating Site
The site is excavated to a depth of 3-4 inches for patios and walkways, and 7-8 inches for driveways and parking
areas.
Compact Soil and Install Paver Base
A plate compactor compacts the base layer of soil. We then install quartermod (crushed limestone rock). The appropriate grade for drainage is given to the base to ensure water flows appropriately for drainage in a process known as “screeding”.areas.
Laying Pavers
Pavers come in different shapes and sizes. Each type determines the patterns available. A soldier course (border) is put on most patios for stability and aesthetics.
Concrete Border and Polymeric Sand
A concrete border is added below grade to lock in the pavers. Polymeric sand is applied to the joints. A plate compactor with a protective pad is ran over the pavers to help settle the sand and even out any imperfections. The sand is water activated, and your project is complete! If you are interested in paver sealing, please go on to the next page.
Polymeric sand comes in several colors. There is a plastic polymer mixed in with the sand that is water activated and hardens into a grout like substance. Traditionally, masonry sand was used with pavers for hundreds of years. Polymeric sand is more expensive, but will not wash out or shift like masonry sand and is an industry standard practice.
Paver Sealing
What is paver sealing?
- Reduce stains from acorns/leaves, organic debris, and tire marks
- Makes pavers easier to clean
- Wet look sealers bring out the colors of pavers
- Will extend the life of your pavers
- Paver sealing coats the pavers with a latex or oil coat. Similar to paint, these sealers can have a flat or glossy look. Sealing does not make the pavers slippery. Sealant helps protect the surface from fading, weather damage, and everyday wear, preserving the color and integrity of your pavers for years to come.
Do I need paver sealing?
It is always recommended, but not absolutely necessary. Most of our clients do decide to seal their pavers. We typically price this as a separate item in our quotes.
When should the pavers be sealed?
As soon as possible after the initial installation. If we are sealing an existing patio, we often have to clean the patio, clean out the polymeric sand, re-sand, and then seal the patio to ensure a professional finish. The renovation work is usually a very time consuming process that can be avoided by sealing the pavers as soon as possible after installation.
